Dance Is Life Pop-Up on Governors Island

  • Liggett Hall, Governors Island New York, NY 10007 United States (map)

All aboard! Dance Is Life hosts a special event and quick escape to Governors Island where the city will become a distant view. Take a ferry ride to this free Latin Hustle dance social, for a chance to connect through the joy of social dance! Join co-founders and co-hosts Natasha Diggs and Abdiel as we dance the night away under the iconic archway at Liggett Hall, a short walk from the ferry landing.

This event will close out House Fest 2024, a three-day event from August 16-19, 2024, to celebrate the diverse range of works offered by the Organizations in Residence along Nolan Park and Colonels Row. Governors Island Arts brings together more than two dozen cultural partners in and around the historic former military houses of Nolan Park and Colonels Row on the Island, featuring free dance and music performances, outdoor installations, interactive workshops, open studios, panel discussions, and more.

The third-annual celebration will also feature the incredible lineup of works already on display from the two dozen Organizations in Residence in the historic houses in Nolan Park and Colonels Row. To attend other events during this three-day event, all of which are free, visit www.governorsisland.com.

Dance Is Life is an intergenerational dance party that honors the tradition of Latin Hustle being danced in the outdoor spaces of NYC, while welcoming other dance styles and igniting a diverse space for exchange and creativity. Latin Hustle is a partner dance that originated in the South Bronx in the early 1970s, created predominantly by Puerto Rican and Black teenagers, that defies traditional gender norms where any gender can lead or follow—even role swap—and celebrates its LGBTQ+ innovators.
